APC Governors Back Tinubu's Security Reforms, Pledge Collaborative Efforts
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have endorsed President Bola Tinubu's "sweeping re-engineering of Nigeria's security architecture."
In October, Tinubu made changes in the hierarchy of the Service Chiefs, a move that the Presidency denied was connected to a rumored coup plot, but instead described as a step to "inject new direction" into the armed forces.
The APC governors declared that the protection of citizens' lives and property remains a duty they will actively reinforce in their respective states. This position emerged after a two-day strategy meeting of the Progressive Governors Forum in Lagos, where leaders reviewed national challenges, including security coordination, economic reforms, and governance at the grassroots.
The governors commended Tinubu for ongoing reforms, emphasizing that the safety of lives and property remains a non-negotiable obligation of the government. They resolved to continue strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering, and conflict-prevention mechanisms while supporting victims of violence and disaster.
Beyond security, the Forum assessed the economic landscape, acknowledging the strain on citizens due to macroeconomic adjustments. The governors recognized the resilience and patience of Nigerians and expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices being made for a stronger and more inclusive economy.
They also resolved to scale up interventions in food production, SME support, youth employment, and targeted social protection for vulnerable groups, working closely with federal institutions and local governments to ensure no group is left behind.
The Forum highlighted infrastructure and urban renewal as essential for economic productivity, commending Lagos State for its pioneering role in transport reforms, urban regeneration, and innovative financing models. It pledged increased investment in roads, housing, public transport, water and sanitation, digital connectivity, and climate-resilient infrastructure, with a commitment to inclusivity.
On governance at the grassroots, the governors reiterated that effective local governance is central to delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda. They resolved to deepen reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and service delivery in local government administration, within the framework of the Constitution and in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
They also agreed to improve citizen engagement platforms, emphasizing the importance of listening to the people, explaining government policies clearly, and adjusting implementation strategies based on feedback to build trust and sustain democratic legitimacy.
Reaffirming their loyalty to the ruling party, the governors praised the APC leadership's efforts to entrench internal democracy and discipline, pledging to maintain stability within the party.
The Progressive Governors concluded by reaffirming their full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and the policies of APC governments at all levels, emphasizing their role as trustees of the people's mandate and leaders jointly responsible for translating the aspirations of Nigerians into tangible social and economic outcomes across the federation.
