In a groundbreaking move that could reshape the future of gold mining in West Africa, FLSmidth has been selected as the exclusive technology partner and supplier for Azumah Resources Gh Limited's Black Volta gold project in Ghana. This partnership marks a significant milestone, as it paves the way for the development of the first fully Ghanaian-owned gold mine in the country. But here's where it gets even more intriguing: the deal, valued at approximately DKK 235 million, includes not just the supply of cutting-edge equipment but also comprehensive technical support and lifecycle services, setting a new standard for mining projects in the region.
PRESS RELEASE
FLSmidth & Co. A/S

Copenhagen, Denmark
Azumah Resources Gh Limited has entrusted FLSmidth with the role of strategic technology partner, tasking the company with providing all major equipment and process technologies for the Black Volta gold project. The order, booked in Q4 2025, encompasses long-lead equipment such as gyratory crushers, a Raptor cone crusher, SAG and ball mills, pre-leach thickeners, screens, apron feeders, and KREBS cyclones and pumps. Additionally, FLSmidth will supply equipment for absorption, desorption, refining, and detoxification processes. And this is the part most people miss: the agreement also includes on-site support for erection, installation, start-up, commissioning, and training, along with spare parts and a performance guarantee for the process equipment.
Controversially, while some industry experts applaud this partnership as a step toward sustainable mining, others question whether such large-scale projects can truly align with environmental goals. FLSmidth’s MissionZero initiative, which aims for zero emissions in mining by 2030, is a bold commitment, but can it be fully realized in the context of a rapidly expanding gold mining industry? Julian Soles, Products Business Line President at FLSmidth, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to contribute our industry-leading expertise to this historic project. Our ability to maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact was a key factor in Azumah Resources’ decision to collaborate with us.”
Azumah Resources Gh Limited echoed this sentiment, highlighting FLSmidth’s global reputation and proven track record in gold processing projects. “We are confident that FLSmidth’s technologies and lifecycle support will play a pivotal role in the success of the Black Volta project,” they stated.
But here’s the thought-provoking question: As Ghana embraces its first fully owned gold mine, how can the industry balance economic growth with environmental sustainability? Share your thoughts in the comments below—do you think large-scale mining projects can coexist with ambitious sustainability goals?
