A Diverse Group of Visiting Fellows at Harvard Kennedy School: Uniting Politics and Leadership
Get ready for an exciting spring semester at Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics (IOP), where a diverse and influential group of visiting fellows will be joining the resident fellows to engage in meaningful discussions and inspire the next generation of leaders.
Among the visiting fellows, we have former U.S. Representative Kevin McCarthy, who served as the 55th Speaker of the House, and Pete Buttigieg, the former Secretary of Transportation. Both individuals bring a wealth of political experience and insights to the table.
But here's where it gets controversial... McCarthy and Buttigieg will be joined by a mix of former government officials, economic advisors, and media personalities. The resident fellows, announced in a recent press release, include Chris Liddell, a former deputy chief of staff in the Trump administration, and Rohit Chopra, who served as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under the Biden administration.
Also joining the group is Chrystia Freeland, a former deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Canada, who now serves as an economic advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Aimee Rogstad Guidera, former secretary of education in Virginia, Tishaura O. Jones, former mayor of St. Louis, Missouri, and Byron York, a chief political correspondent, will bring their unique perspectives to the table.
And this is the part most people miss... these fellows will facilitate eight-week study groups, covering a wide range of topics from consumer protection to international relations. It's an opportunity for students to engage with experts and explore the complexities of these fields.
Pete Buttigieg, a former IOP Student Advisory Board president, expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the IOP and engaging students on the importance of public service. He believes this is a pivotal moment for American democracy, and empowering young people to participate in politics is crucial.
Rohit Chopra plans to focus on the role of corporate power and regulation in shaping the U.S. economy, highlighting the influence of corporate and financial interests on our daily lives and government policies. Freeland, with her experience in Canadian politics, looks forward to working with students on global economic and democratic challenges, believing in the transformative power of committed students and young people.
Other fellows, like Aimee Rogstad Guidera and Tishaura O. Jones, will explore broader themes, such as education policy, leadership, and the intersection of local government and democracy. Byron York, with his extensive reporting experience on five presidential administrations, sees the fellowship as an opportunity to reflect on the forces shaping contemporary American politics.
IOP Interim Co-Directors Beth Myers and Ned Price praised the fellows' diverse backgrounds and experiences, believing they will foster timely and impactful conversations, inspire students to pursue public service, and prepare the next generation for leadership roles.
Anoushka Lal and Samantha Ruazol, chairs of the Fellows and Study Groups Program, emphasized that the spring 2026 cohort reflects the IOP's commitment to fostering cross-partisan dialogue and civic engagement. They believe this program sets an example for rigorous and constructive civic engagement nationwide.
In addition to his role as a visiting fellow, Pete Buttigieg will also join the Center of Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School as a Hauser Leader this spring. The Hauser Leaders program brings public leaders to campus to engage with students through teaching, advising, and public programming. The spring 2026 cohort includes notable figures like John Anzalone, Anita Dunn, David Lebryk, Deval Patrick, and Paul Ryan.
So, what do you think about this diverse group of visiting fellows? How do you envision their impact on students and the future of leadership? Feel free to share your thoughts and engage in a constructive discussion in the comments below!
