Typically, Treasury secretaries are known for their composed dialogues around economic matters while appearing before Congress, but this particular session was anything but ordinary. The atmosphere was charged with tension as Bessent engaged in several fiery disputes with Democratic representatives, even returning fire with insults directed at them.
For instance, when Rep. Sylvia Garcia raised concerns about how undocumented immigrants might impact housing affordability, Bessent dismissed her by labeling her as "confused." This prompted an indignant response from Garcia, who retorted, "Don’t be demeaning to me, alright?"
In another instance, Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts questioned the halted investigations into various cryptocurrency companies. Bessent's mocking reaction to Lynch's inquiries led the frustrated representative to assert, "Mister Chairman, the answers have to be responsive if we are going to have a serious hearing." To which Bessent coolly replied, "Well, the questions have to be serious."
The exchange reached a boiling point when California’s Rep. Maxine Waters called for intervention amidst the back-and-forth regarding whether tariffs contribute to inflation or merely cause short-term price hikes for consumers, exclaiming, "Can someone shut him up?"
A particularly intense moment arose during a discussion involving Rep. Gregory Meeks and the investment made by the royal family of Abu Dhabi in the Trump family's World Liberty Financial cryptocurrency firm. In a fit of anger, Meeks shouted at Bessent, demanding he stop covering for the president and accusing him of being a mere flunky, even using an expletive to emphasize his frustration.
The Treasury Department has not yet commented on these explosive interactions. Graham Steele, a former assistant secretary for financial institutions under Janet Yellen, remarked that Bessent’s behavior was far from typical for someone in his position. He pointed out that Treasury officials traditionally maintain a certain distance from the rough-and-tumble nature of political discourse. Steele reflected on his experiences, where discussions, though tense, remained respectful and focused on policy rather than personal attacks.
Bessent's increasingly combative demeanor towards Democratic leaders has become more pronounced in recent months. He has labeled California Governor Gavin Newsom as "economically illiterate," drawing a disturbing comparison to the fictional character Patrick Bateman, and derided him as "a brontosaurus with a brain the size of a walnut." Additionally, he has repeatedly referred to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren as an "American Peronist" after she criticized American financial institutions for supporting the Trump administration's substantial aid package to Argentina.
According to David Lublin, chair of the Government Department at American University, Bessent's confrontational style reflects the current political climate fostered by President Trump, who seems to favor aggressive defense from his appointees. Lublin noted, "It’s hard to claim that this behavior is unusual given today's political environment. The traditional respect once shown toward Congress has eroded significantly."
What stood out to Lublin was Bessent's willingness to express views on monetary policy—an area typically reserved for the Federal Reserve—alongside his belief that Trump should have the authority to influence central bank decisions. He remarked, "You have a cabinet secretary defending the president’s efforts to undermine institutions."
Bessent will face lawmakers again soon, as he is scheduled to appear before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee to discuss the annual report by the Financial Stability Oversight Council, which he leads.
